Walsingham

By Brian J Surrey

The shrine of Walsingham begun in 1061 where Our Lady appeared to Richeldis de Faverches whom Our Lady asked to recreate the holy house in Nazareth where the Holy Family lived in her county of Norfolk. Many pilgrims came from far and wide to visit the shrine inc. kings. In 1535 the monastery and shrine were dissolved and Walsingham forgotten apart from a trickle of pilgrims. In the 19th century, devotion was revived in the Anglican and Catholic traditions.
