Sky burial

By John Ng

This photo was captured in a small rural village in Sichuan province (China), where a Tibetan funeral (“Sky burial” or jhator) is taking place. This community practices Vajrayana Buddhism, which teaches the “rebirth”. It represents an act of generosity of the deceased and it also serves a practical purpose. This funeral practice may seem gruesome (especially to western societies), but its meaning is of significant importance to the community that practices their faith.
