Buddhist Monks Receiving Alms, Laos, 2015

By Dakota Gibbs

As the sunrises in Laos young Buddhist monks take the streets in Luang Prabang to receive alms. They walk silently, bare foot and in single file. The giving of alms is the main source of food for these monks, and the ceremony is not thought of as charitable; instead it creates a spiritual connection between lay Buddhists and the monks. Within the local community, the lay people have a responsibility to support the monks physically, while the monks support the community spiritually.
