Sands of Faith

By Robert Boughen

This photo was taken during the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha in Kenema, Sierra Leone. It is a intimate portrait of an elder after mid-morning prayers. To many West Africans, faith is life, and their fill their faith with colour and devotion. But what stands out most to me in this photo is the sand still pressed against his forehead from where he has just prayed. Add to that the look in his eyes, and the sweat on his chest, and he is a picture of devotion, while his clothes are the joy.
