Yesterday's Prayers

By Heather Emond

My photograph shows the old wax of prayer candles on the summit of San Cristobal in Lima, Peru. Peruvian society is a wonderful, multicultural celebration of Catholicism and the ancient indigenous religion of the Incas. These prayer candles are symbolic of this diversity, with the act of lighting a prayer candle being quite a Christian ritual; and yet the colour of each candle corresponds to esoteric and older notions about luck, superstition and chance.
